Move over FOMO; introducing MOI
Jul 28, 2025
We live in a world where everything is happening everywhere and at all times ("Everything, Everywhere, All At Once", right ? ;) ) but I feel that our brains cannot handle this level of intensity, and frankly - our souls cannot either.
In the periods of life where there were more choices than time or energy, I found myself literally sharpening the pencil and deciding what to skip.
With age, I will admit, my pencil was getting sharper and sharper, LOL!!!
And it wasn't necessary that I got lazy (although I will admit, I cannot party the way I was able to in my 20s... so if you are in your 20s, and reading it - enjoy it!!! :) :) :) ) - I just started valuing my time and my experiences that much more. Suddenly it was more about quality than quantity.
Party hoping was never my thing, but I always wondered what was the point? Sure there were massive amounts of fun pictures to go thru on November 1st, but hitting four Halloween parties at one night wouldn't offer any time to have a nice conversation with anybody - "Sorry need to go!"
As Lloyd Cole sings: We've nowhere to be / We need to get going"...
I had tickets for the concert of my dreams for Saturday evening some time ago... and I skipped an event on Friday before that --- I did not want to be tired and "off" during the night that I have been waiting for for so long...
So, move over FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) and let me introduce an alternative: MOI, which stands for Missing Out. Intentionally.
Do less.
Enjoy it more.
Don't skim the book just to jump to the next one.
Don't check your cell phone when you pet a cat purring on your lap.
When you meet with friends, make sure they have your loving, undivided attention.
You get the idea.
Be so selective that everything you decide to do will feel like a treasure, not a stepping stone to the next thing in 2 hours.
Try it for a month and see your life open.
Your brain will thank you.
And so will your soul.
